Our mission is to connect people to reptiles & amphibians through inspiration, preservation, and education. The World Reptile & Amphibian Preservation Society aims to utilize its resources to preserve reptile & amphibian species worldwide using a multi-faceted approach consisting of working with zoological institutions to create captive breeding programs in conjunction with utilizing funds to preserve the natural habitats of vulnerable species where they naturally exist in the wild. An example of this might be encouraging landowners to preserve portions of their holdings as natural habitats for target species. We endeavor to research husbandry practices, expand our collective knowledge, and create an environment where experienced keepers can share their knowledge both informally and via presentations and publications. We hope to educate the public, budding herpetologists and aspiring zookeepers alike.
A primary objective of WRAPS is to educate the public and private keepers about the importance of conservation, best husbandry practices, and what they can do to preserve species around the world.
Our "two-pronged approach" aims to ensure the long-term survival of the world's reptiles & amphibians, which must include the preservation of natural habitats as well as ex-situ conservation programs.
We strive to increase awareness of the need for reptile and amphibian species and habitat conservation, and to garner resources to support existing conservation efforts .
We conduct and assist research in the field of herpetology for the use of zoological institutions, herpetoculturists, researchers, and veterinary professionals.
The ARK Initiative is a program developed by WRAPS to ensure the survival of reptile and amphibian species world wide by developing captive breeding programs and lineage databases for vulnerable species.
WRAPS members have a combined 100+ individual publications and now assist others in the scientific process and publishing their own results so that studies are available to both academic institutions and the public.
